How can one say that a movie is good | Reviews and ratings

My family went on for dinner at a local mall near our place and decided to watch a movie after. My dad has assigned me in advance to check out the movies that were available for that day to know what are the good ones. Seeing the list, I am kind of torn to recommend either Captain America - The Winter Soldier or The Son of Man movie. But what I told him is that the ratings of the movie Captain America were far better than The Son of Man. And so we decided to watch Captain America at that time.

MARVEL super heroes-themed party
Meet the new MARVEL super heroes. Kazzam! HAHA! Can you guess roles?

To tell you honestly, I got bored watching the first movie of Captain America making my expectations on viewing this Winter Soldier part very low. Little that I know of is that we were there to watch an awesome, super cool and very inspiring movie. Now I am here thinking about what specific details made me like it and how did the ratings affect it. So how can really one say that a movie is good?

When I was young, all I care about in a movie is the graphics. If the graphics are good, the movie is good, its animation and effects. But now that I am getting more mature, I now start to look at its storyline and the message behind each movie. I actually have asked my cousin about this and she feels the same way, by the way, she is 1 year younger than me so, there. I think it is a natural thing that changes in preference happen as you add years to your life (which I hardly imagine when I was young).

Getting back to the topic, I am kind of amazed how reviewers and raters judge any movie, is it by its casts? graphics and animation? the story plot? the popularity of the movie? the way the actors have played the role? the message behind the movie, etc..

In thinking of this, I compared it to other media like the following: In a television drama, if you felt what the scene would like you to feel then it was good; In a comedy show, if it made you laugh in some way well then it is good; In a musical show, if you wanted to sing with it at that moment with them or even after the show, one can already say that it was good as well.

Looking at their similarities, they all wanted to inspire and channel the message to its audience. The bottom point here is that have you gotten something out of watching them (a take-home in any form like values and inspiration), or in our case for this article of watching the movie? If you have, well then great. You have gotten what you've paid for. The graphics, acting, props, cast, and other things are just bonuses if they excel on these things which make the impact on its audience better.

In my case, watching the Captain America movie made a good mix on all of those factors given making it a great movie. The graphics were phenomenal, the scenes were breath-taking, the stunts were very cool and it has take-home values like friendship and camaraderie. Not to takeout that I am again inspired to go to the gym or simply just take care of my health better. For kids, if they want to be like Captain America it means that the movie has an impact on them. Wait, does this mean I am still a kid? ROFL!

Nowadays especially in the Philippines, you know that one movie is a good one if there are a lot of people inside the cinema even before it starts. It can be as well that even that it was showed for quite some time now, it still gets decent viewers inside the movie house. But we'll conclude this article post still depending on once personal perspective: On what you were looking for before watching it, or from what point of view were you watching it from. The ratings from the reviewers actually represent a part of our current population and they give us advanced hints of the movie. You can either agree with them or not depending on how the movie hit you.

But nonetheless, all of these things make the movie experience so exciting and thrilling making it one of our most favorite industries of this generation.

  1. Nowadays, there are too many opinions voiced out from the public and I don't really know how to say or judge if a movie is generally good or bad. For me, it's when the story is moving then it hits me.

  5. If the movie, plays, drama, etc..captures the audience personality, then, it's good. But if not, it means the audience don't like it. We have different perspective when dealing with this kind of entertainment. others may say, boring, but for others, it's very entertaining. So, better, review a movie with your own understanding.

  6. I wish people who do reviews know the difference between a review and spoilers. Some reviews could be done without stating the obvious.
